Helen Dare
MA (Oxon), BA, PhD
Tutor in Biblical Studies
Helen grew up in Newport (Gwent) and currently lives in Pembrokeshire. Having studied Classics and then worked in administration at Regent’s Park College, Oxford, she returned to Wales to train for ministry at Cardiff Baptist College. She then did a PhD at Bristol University on British Baptist Hermeneutics and the theology of Walter Brueggemann. She has a particular interest in how Baptist communities engage with the Bible, and the spirituality of the Psalms. In College and Cardiff University she teaches Hebrew Bible / Old Testament as well as Biblical Interpretation focusing on the Psalms.
Helen has been Minister of Broad Haven Baptist Church in Pembrokeshire since 2011, a role which she now combines with her role as Tutor at Cardiff Baptist College. As a minister in a church that is a member of both Baptists Together and the Baptist Union of Wales, she has served both Unions and their respective Associations, including as a Trustee of the BUW and most recently as a Theological Reflector for Project Violet (a research project investigating women’s experience in ministry and developing women ministers). Helen finds that these two ministry roles are mutually enriching, and that living and being a minister in coastal West Wales helps her to understand the context of students who live in communities that are very different to cities and large towns.
