Born in Pencader in West Wales, Hefin Jones was educated at Pencader Primary  and Llandysul Grammar Schools, before graduating in Zoology from King's College, University of London and gaining his doctorate from Imperial College, University of London. While at King’s College he also gained the AKC Diploma from the Department of Theology. After three years working for the Agricultural and Food Research Council in Wellesbourne, Warwickshire, he returned to Imperial College, as a Research Fellow where he led the scene-setting international Ecotron Project researching the ecological effects of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems. In 2000 he moved to Cardiff University where he is currently the Director of Undergraduate Education in the School of Biosciences. He has played a role as an Advisory Scientist to the Ecology Center of Kyoto University, Japan, and as the National Science Foundation International Member of the Phytotron Management Panel, Duke University, USA.  Hefin is currently an editor of Global Change Biology, the leading international journal in the field of climate change. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society.

During his career Hefin has been a senior officer of the British Ecological Society, and a member of the Research Board of the European Scientific Foundation. In Wales he has been Chair of the Gymdeithas Wyddonol Genedlaethol, Cymrodorion Caerdydd and a regular contributor to Welsh media.  Hefin served four years as Secretary of the Youth Department of the International Congregation Fellowship, has been President of Undeb yr Annibynwyr Cymraeg and at various times Secretary of the Christian Citizenship Department of the Undeb and Chair of its Training Board.  He is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the World Communion of Reformed Churches. He was honoured with membership of Gorsedd Cymru in 2007 and was Dean of Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol (2011 – 22). He was presented with the Science and Technology Medal at the Cardiff National Eisteddfod in 2018. Along with Dr Noel Davies he authored Cristnogaeth a Gwyddoniaeth (Christianity and Science) published by University of Wales Press.
